Terre des Homme was founded in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser in Lausanne. At first its aim was to bring sick children to Switzerland who could not be treated in their own country (Algeria, Tunisia, Vietnam, etc). In 1966 a group was formed in Geneva. This was followed by other countries, giving birth to Terre des Hommes Switzerland. Soon after, the movement spread to other countries and the International Federation of Terre des Hommes was formed.

In 1972, following a divergence of opinion with the founder, the movement Terre des Hommes underwent an upheaval. The Lausanne association became a Foundation, whereas Terre des Hommes Suisse was reorganised into two sections – Geneva and Basle.

In spite of their differences, the two associations complement each other and a limited cooperation strengthens the action of raising public awareness in Switzerland of the abuses of children’s rights.
